Previous Year Paper of Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination
Exam Pattern
UPSC is conducted for the selection of officers for Indian Administrative Service(IAS). IAS Exam Pattern talks about the distribution of questions, marking schemes, sectional weightage, and duration. The brief for all three stages of IAS Exam are:
UPSC (Civil Service Exams) Preliminary Exam: It has two papers of objective type and carries a maximum of 400 marks. There are two papers in the preliminary exam. Paper-II (CSAT) in IAS Exams(Civil Service Exams) is of qualifying Nature and candidates should score a min of 33% in this paper to qualify for the next stage of the IAS Exams (Civil Service Exams) i.e. the Mains.
UPSC (Civil Service Exams) Main Exam: There are two types of Papers- Qualifying Papers and Papers that will be counted for Merit. The former will consist of Two Language Exams, one of the candidate’s choice and other English. The latter will consist of 9 papers including 7 Merit and 2 Qualifying language papers. The main exam will comprise of both essay writing and objective type questions. The sum total of all papers and the score secured in the interview round will be used for the ranking of candidates.
UPSC (Civil Service Exams) Personality Test: An interview of 275 Marks would be taken of the candidates Qualified in the Mains Exam. This would include the Psychometric Test, Assessment Test as well as the Personal Interview. Marks obtained in the test would be added to the calculation for the declaration of the Final Merit List.
Preliminary Exams of UPSC (Civil Service Exams)
The Examination shall comprise of two compulsory Papers of 200 marks each.
(i) Both the question papers will be of the objective type (Multiple Choice Questions) and each will be of two hours duration.
(ii) The General Studies Paper-II of the Civil Services (Preliminary) Examination will be a qualifying paper with minimum qualifying marks fixed at 33%.

- Basic numeracy (numbers and their relations, orders of magnitude, etc.) (Class X level), Data interpretation (charts, graphs, tables, data sufficiency etc. — Class X level);

Paper I: UPSC Mains Syllabus for Essay paper
As such the UPSC Mains syllabus doesn’t have a prescribed section for the Essay paper. In the essay paper in UPSC Mains, candidates have to write two essays out of a few given options for a total of 250 marks. As per the UPSC, “Candidates are expected to keep close to the subject of the essay to arrange their ideas in an orderly fashion and to write concisely. Credit will be given for effective and exact expression.”
Paper II – General Studies I
This paper will contain questions relating to ancient India pertaining to History, Geography, Heritage, Culture, etc. Some of the topics include

Paper III – General Studies II

Interview
The UPSC IAS Interview round, also known as Personality Test is the final stage. Here, the candidate will be asked some questions face-to-face to determine whether he or she is fit for the civil services career. The questions will be asked by the board which consists of competent and unbiased observers who have a record of the candidates’ career. The maximum marks allotted for the Personality Test are 275 marks.
NOTE :
(i) The papers on Indian languages and English (Paper A and paper B) will be of Matriculation or equivalent standard and will be of qualifying nature. The marks obtained in these papers will not be counted for ranking.
(ii) Evaluation of the papers, namely, ‘Essay’, ‘General Studies’ and Optional Subject of all the candidates would be done simultaneously along with evaluation of their qualifying papers on ‘Indian Languages’ and ‘English’ but the papers on Essay, General Studies and Optional Subject of only such candidates will be taken cognizance who attain 25% marks in ‘Indian Language’ and 25% in English as minimum qualifying standards in these qualifying papers.
(iii) The paper A on Indian Language will not, however, be compulsory for candidates hailing from the States of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Sikkim.
(iv) The paper A on Indian Language will not, however, be compulsory for Candidates belonging to Persons with Benchmark Disabilities (only Hearing Impairment sub-category) provided that they have been granted such exemption from 2nd or 3rd language courses by the concerned education Board/University. The candidate needs to provide an undertaking/self declaration in this regard in order to claim such an exemption to the Commission.
(v) Marks obtained by the candidates for the Paper I-VII only will be counted for merit ranking. However, the Commission will have the discretion to fix qualifying marks in any or all of these papers.
(vi) For the Language medium/literature of languages, the scripts to be used by the candidates will be as under :—
